Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors
Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors (RTI) are another major type of anti-HIV medication. They work by blocking a protein called Reverse Transcriptase. This protein is necessary in virus replication. RTIs, like Protease Inhibitors slow down the reproduction process of the virus, resulting in slower disease progression.
RTIs are further subdivided into 3 groups based on their chemical structures: the Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors (Nukes), the Non-nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors (Non-nukes), and the Nucleotide Analogue Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors (NtRTI).
