Members' Words

"What really helped was meeting other queer Asian youth. I shared with them what they could understand, such as the good old family name, or how I am going to bring my girlfriend home on special holidays."

"I was really afraid to go to a meeting because I didn't know what to expect. But when I came to a GenerAsians Together barbecue, it gave me a chance to better understand and accept my lesbian daughter. I was really feeling isolated before this."

"My parents don't know that I'm gay. It's encouraging to see how other parents accept and support their gay children."

Background History

At a 1998 Toronto conference of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered Asians, youth and their parents expressed feelings of isolation and alienation. We felt the strong need for an organized community response to support the needs of queer youths, their parents, families and friends.

A steering committee was formed to plan culturally and linguistically appropriate programs and services.

GenerAsians Together is a project sponsored by the Asian Community AIDS Services. Asian Community AIDS Services (ACAS) provides HIV/AIDS education and support to the East and Southeast Asian community.
