Program Positions
Position Title: PHA Language Interpreter
Supervisor: Support Program Coordinator
Objective: To provide assistance and support
to PHAs to improve their healthand emotional well-being by helping
PHAs who’s first language is not English to overcome language
barriers that can prevent them from accessing adequate treatment
and services.
Time Commitment: 2 hours per week, 6 months
commitment
Qualification/Requirements:
- fluency in an East Asian and/or South-East Asian language
is required
- must be flexible with time to accompany clients to medical
and social services appointments as required
- awareness of Asian issues and other relevant social issues
that affect the Asian community
- must be emotionally, spiritually, psychologically, and physically
capable of providing emotional and practical support to ACAS
clients
- awareness of HIV issues and their impact on the health and
emotional well-being of PHAs.
- ability to provide client-based service that is non-judgmental,
supportive and empowering
- good communication and social skills that is sensitive to
people with special needs
- possession of car and valid driver’s license an asset
Responsibilities/Duties:
- to accompany and provide language interpretation to ACAS
clients at medical and other social services appointments as
required
- to provide Support Program Coordinator with case updates
- to observe ACAS principles and guidelines when providing
service to clients
- attend ongoing information and skills building training with
the Support Coordinator in order to upgrade service and knowledge
base
Training & Placement: Volunteer is required
to attend the Volunteer Orientation Training, to complete the
Volunteer Core Skills Training, and to attend Program-Specific
Training with the Support Program Coordinator.
Evaluation: Performance will be reviewed and
evaluated by the Support Program Coordinator at the end of the
6 months contract.
Protocol: No personal involvement with client(s)
at any time during volunteer work (e.g. exchanging phone numbers,
engaging in physical or sexual contact). Maintaining confidentiality
of client is absolutely essential.
Position Title: PHA Public Speaker
Supervisor: Support Program Coordinator
Objective: To be a PHA representative of ACAS
to advocate for PHA causes and be a spokesperson both in the community
within and outside ACAS to share experiences and to raise awareness
of the important issues PHAs face
Time Commitment: as needed
Qualification/Requirements:
- willingness to disclose HIV status and ability to do public
speaking
- awareness of HIV issues and their impact on the health and
emotional well-being of PHAs.
- good communication and social skills; experience in public
speaking an asset
- knowledge of Asian issues and fluency in an Asian language
an asset
Responsibilities/Duties:
- to speak publicly to share information and experience as
a PHA
- to draft and deliver speeches within ACAS and outside in
the community that ACAS services
- to advocate for important issues relevant to ACAS PHA community
and to promote ACAS services and programs in the community at
large
- to observe ACAS principles and guidelines when providing
service
- attend ongoing information and skills building training with
the Support Coordinator in order to upgrade service and knowledge
base
Training & Placement: Volunteer is required
to attend the Volunteer Orientation Training, to complete the
Volunteer Core Skills Training, and to attend Program-Specific
Training with the Support Program Coordinator.

Position Title: PHA Support Volunteer
Supervisor: Support Program Coordinator
Objective: To provide assistance and support
to PHAs to improve their health and emotional well-being.
To provide emotional support and companionship to PHAs to assist
them in resolving the impact of living with HIV/AIDS.
To assist PHAs to maintain their independence by assisting
them to overcome barriers, maintain and/or acquire skills to improve
their quality of life
Time Commitment: 2 hours per week, 6 months
commitment
Qualification/Requirements:
- must be emotionally, spiritually, psychologically, and physically
capable of providing emotional and practical support to ACAS
clients
- awareness of HIV issues and their impact on the health and
emotional well-being of PHAs.
- ability to provide client-based service that is non-judgmental,
supportive and empowering
- good communication and social skills that is sensitive to
people with special needs
- must be flexible with time, nights and weekends availability
- knowledge of Asian issues and an Asian language required
Responsibilities/Duties:
- to provide relevant and appropriate companionship, practical
and emotional support to ACAS clients
- to contact client regularly and arrange visits to be made
on a mutually agreed time and place
- to accompany clients to appointments as requested
- to participate in personal care of client and living quarters
as needed
- to provide Support Program Coordinator with case updates
- to observe ACAS principles and guidelines when providing
service to clients
- attend ongoing information and skills building training with
the Support Coordinator in order to upgrade service and knowledge
base
Training & Placement: Volunteer is required

Wellness Volunteer
Supervisor: Support Program Coordinator
Objective: To provide assistance and support
to PHAs to improve their health and emotional well-being through
the provision of holistic therapy and other relevant healthcare
practices
Time Commitment: 2 hours per week, 6 months
commitment
Qualification/Requirements:
- must have appropriate healthcare practitioner qualifications
for providing any one of the following – massage therapy,
shiatsu, Reiki, etc
- must be emotionally, spiritually, psychologically, and physically
capable of providing emotional and practical support to ACAS
clients
- awareness of HIV issues and their impact on the health and
emotional well-being of PHAs.
- ability to provide client-based service that is non-judgmental,
supportive and empowering
- good communication and social skills that is sensitive to
people with special needs
- knowledge of Asian issues and an Asian language an asset

Position Title: PHA Social Event
Planner
Supervisor: Support Program Coordinator
Objective: To organize short-term and/or ongoing
social events for ACAS clients that promotes and maintains healthy
and safe social interactions among peers
To assist in the development of support group initiatives for
ACAS clients to participate in ongoing self-development, information
exchange, and advancement of issues and causes relevant to the
maintenance of their quality of life.
Time Commitment: varies dependent on event
Qualification/Requirements:
- must be emotionally, spiritually, psychologically, and physically
capable of providing emotional and practical support to ACAS
clients
- ability to work cooperatively with others
- awareness of HIV issues and their impact on the health and
emotional well-being of PHAs.
- good communication and social skills that is non-judgmental,
supportive, empowering and sensitive to people with special
needs
- knowledge of Asian issues and an Asian language required
Responsibilities/Duties:
- consult with Support Program Coordinator to plan and organize
annual PHA retreat and social gatherings for ACAS clients
- liaise with ACAS clients to determine needs and event
program objectives
- develop and implement event program initiatives for
PHA social events
- evaluate social event programs and report back to Support
Program Coordinator to help facilitate a better understanding
of client needs and effectiveness of event program planning
Training & Placement: Volunteer is required
to attend the Volunteer Orientation Training, to complete the
Volunteer Core Skills Training, and to attend Program-Specific
Training with the Support Program Coordinator.
