MSM, Women and Youth
Position Title: Special Events

Supervisor: MSM, Women’s and Youth Education & Outreach Coordinator

Objective: To assist the Education & Outreach Coordinators to organize and staff social events like the annual Pride Parade, Memorial Events and Walk for Life.

To promote AIDS awareness, ACAS programs and services, and general HIV/AIDS advocacy to the community directly serviced by ACAS.

Time Commitment: as needed

Qualification/Requirements:

  • willingness to participate in public events to promote HIV/AIDS awareness and ACAS programs and services
  • awareness and sensitivity to sexual health issues, HIV issues, and challenges faced by affected population served by ACAS
  • assertive social and communication skills required to make effective contact with strangers
  • ability to provide information in a compassionate and non-judgmental manner
  • knowledge of Asian social issues and language an asset
  • ability to work under supervision and with others
  • car and driver’s license an asset

Responsibilities/Duties:

  • participate in special events as a representative of ACAS’ mission and principles
  • prepare necessary materials (e.g. pamphlets, supplies, posters) for displays at special events
  • hand out sexual health materials, condoms, pamphlets
  • inform contacts about HIV/AIDS, ACAS services and programs and refer clients to resources upon request
  • attend ongoing educational trainings to increase knowledge of relevant community sexual health issues

Training & Placement: Volunteer is required to attend the Volunteer Orientation Training, to complete the Volunteer Core Skills Training, and to attend Program-Specific Training with the Education & Outreach Coordinator.

Evaluation: Performance will be reviewed and evaluated by the Education & Outreach Coordinator at the end of the 6 months contract.

Protocol: No personal involvement with client(s) at any time during outreach (e.g. exchanging phone numbers, engaging in physical or sexual contact). Maintaining confidentiality of client is absolutely essential.

 

MSM (Men who have Sex with Men)
Position Title: Bar Outreach

Supervisor: MSM Education & Outreach Coordinator

Objective: To reduce the transmission of HIV among men who have sex with men within the Asian and South-East Asian community through peer education and safer-sex promotion initiatives in bar and special events venues specific to men who have sex with men.

Time Commitment: 6 months commitment

Qualification/Requirements:

  • knowledge of gay/bisexual Asian male sexual activities and be comfortable with sexuality and discussion of sex
  • agreement to separate personal life from outreach work
  • assertive social and communication skills in order to make effective contact with strangers
  • ability to provide information in a compassionate and non-judgmental manner
  • effective active listening skills
  • basic knowledge of HIV transmission and prevention and willingness to increase knowledge through training and personal study
  • mature, responsible, and reliable
  • a commitment and resolve to practice safer sex methods in personal life
  • ability to work with others
  • knowledge of East and/or South-East Asian culture and  language an asset
  • available to do outreach work during evenings and weekends

Responsibilities/Duties:

  • engage in on-going support and educational meetings with the Education & Outreach Coordinator to review efforts and enhance outreach skills
  • engage men in discussion about their sexual health, provide safer-sex materials such as handing out condoms and pamphlets
  • provide information on HIV/AIDS and ACAS services
  • assess men’s needs with regards to sexual health issues and make the appropriate referrals to resources upon request
  • comply with ethics and policies of ACAS
  • provide constructive feedback to Education & Outreach Coordinator after outreach activities to enhance outreach techniques and contribute to better community understanding.

  • agreement to separate personal life from outreach work
  • assertive social and communication skills in order to make effective contact with strangers

  • basic knowledge of HIV transmission and prevention and willingness to increase knowledge through training and personal study

Objective: To reduce the transmission of HIV among men who have sex with men within the Asian and South-East Asian community through peer education and safer-sex promotion initiatives in internet-based chat lines specific to men who have sex with men.

Time Commitment: 6 months commitment

Qualification/Requirements:

  • knowledge of gay/bisexual Asian male sexual activities and be comfortable with sexuality and discussion of sex
  • knowledge of internet chat line activities and environment required
  • access to computer, internet, and adult chat lines
  • agreement to separate personal life from outreach work
  • assertive social and communication skills in order to make effective contact with strangers
  • ability to provide information in a compassionate and non-judgmental manner
  • effective active listening skills
  • basic knowledge of HIV transmission and prevention and willingness to increase knowledge through training and personal study
  • mature, responsible, and reliable
  • a commitment and resolve to practice safer sex methods in personal life
  • ability to work with others
  • knowledge of East and/or South-East Asian culture and language an asset
  • available to do outreach work during evenings and weekends
