PHA Voices

For some people, five years may not seem like a long time, but
those infected or affected by HIV/AIDS, it may feel like an eternity.
In the last five years, the Asian Community AIDS Services (ACAS)
has been actively providing HIV/AIDS education, prevention and support
services to the East and South East Asian communities in Toronto.
As we enter a new era of the AIDS epidemic and with the development
of a new group of AIDS drugs, people infected with the disease will
be able to live healthier and longer lives. Thus, client users demand
for appropriate and substantial service are changing. In meeting
these needs, ACAS' work team has proactively continued to develop
more resources and programs.
Being a volunteer and service user of ACAS, I have personally
experienced and greatly benefited from these changes both mentally
and physically. Over the past few years, I have experienced times
of tremendous difficulties with my health and in dealing with my
partly visual impairment. Besides having consistent support from
my immediate family, ACAS has played a major role in providing appropriate
and practical counseling services in helping me cope with my illness.
As my health gradually improved, my self-esteem increased. My constant
feeling of loss and vulnerability in our fast-paced society subsided.
With the support and encouragement from the Support Program Coordinator,
I took part in the existing monthly client social support group
and the annual PHA retreat. I had an opportunity to organize social
events and co-facilitate workshops as it is a part of the community
skills development program ACAS provides through peer support. It
was a chance for me to meet new friends, learn, take leadership,
and experience team building.
Furthermore, as my passion for volunteering and involvement increased,
I was invited and nominated to become a member of the Board of Directors.
ACAS is no longer just a service provider, but has become a safe
and non-judgemental educational institution where I can excel and
learn with dignity.
I don't know how much I can do nor how much time I have left,
but at the present time I am happy and healthy. I have overcome
fears and barriers to empowering myself to take charge and prepare
for the future, one day at a time. I would like to take this opportunity
to congratulate ACAS on its 5th Anniversary. I extend my appreciation
and thanks to those volunteers and supporters who have contributed
and believed in ACAS all these years. With your continuing support,
I believe ACAS will move into the new century with greater success.
